For triathletes, the best nasal strips are built for continuous, mixed intensity effort across three disciplines: a firm spring that holds the nasal valve open through the swim, bike and run, and an adhesive strong enough to survive open water, sweat and a wetsuit peel. Your aerobic efficiency at each stage directly affects how much you have left for the next one, and how you breathe plays a real part in that.

Nasal breathing slows your breathing rate, warms and humidifies the air before it reaches your lungs, and triggers a calmer autonomic response than mouth breathing. The nose also produces nitric oxide as air passes through it. Nitric oxide acts as a bronchodilator and a vasodilator, which means nasal breathing helps open your airways and relax your blood vessels, improving oxygen uptake at a tissue level. Over a long triathlon this steadier, more efficient breathing pattern can help you settle into a rhythm rather than spiking your heart rate every time your effort increases.

The catch is that the nose struggles to move enough air at high intensity, which is common on hard bike segments and during the closing stages of the run. Part of that is a normal physical limit everyone shares. But for people with a structural issue it is worse. A deviated septum reduces the cross sectional area of one nasal passage, and combined with the nasal cycle, where the tissue inside your nose alternates which side is more congested on a roughly four hour rotation, the restricted side can feel almost completely blocked exactly when you need it most, late in a long race.

How Nasal Strips Help Triathletes

A nasal strip works on the outside of the nose. It spans the lower cartilage and uses a spring action to lift the lateral nasal wall outward, widening the internal diameter at the nasal valve. The nasal valve is the narrowest point in your entire airway, and it is the same spot that pinches inward if you press gently on the side of your nose while breathing in hard.

In the swim leg, cold water and the initial shock of a mass start will usually force you onto your mouth for the first few hundred metres no matter what you are wearing, and a strip cannot change that reflex. Where it helps is once you settle into your stroke rhythm, and especially through transition and onto the bike, where holding nasal breathing keeps your effort calmer and your heart rate more controlled as you build into the ride. For a triathlete with no structural issue, the main benefit is stopping dynamic valve collapse, where the cartilage gets pulled inward under heavy breathing load late in the bike or run.

  • Skin tolerance: if you are training most days across swim, bike and run, you want a strip that does not leave your skin raw after repeated use.

Does It Actually Improve Performance?

I will be straight about this. The research on nasal strips producing measurable performance gains in trained athletes is mixed. A strip is a breathing aid, not an engine upgrade.

What I can tell you from my own experience is that the subjective difference is real. Breathing through your nose during the steadier phases of a long race feels less effortful and less drying, and it is easier to hold your composure when you are not gasping through your mouth on a long climb or the final kilometres of the run. Nasal Strips if You Have a Deviated Septum

If you have a deviated septum and you train or race in triathlon regularly, nasal strips are probably more useful for you than for the average athlete. You are starting every session with your airway already restricted, so anything that gives part of that width back levels the field a little across a long day. External strips work best when the restriction sits at the nasal valve rather than deep inside the nasal cavity, which is the most common pattern after a knock or a break to the nose. Are nasal strips allowed in triathlon races?

Yes. Nasal strips are a mechanical breathing aid with no drug action, so they are not on any prohibited list from World Triathlon or national federations. You will see age group and professional athletes wearing them on race day.

Can I wear a nasal strip during the swim leg?

Do nasal strips help with triathlon transitions?

Indirectly, yes. A strip that stays in place through the swim means one less thing to think about in T1, and holding nasal breathing as you settle onto the bike can help keep your heart rate calmer as you build effort after the transition.

Do I need a deviated septum for nasal strips to work?

No. Dynamic nasal valve collapse, where the side of the nose pulls inward under hard breathing, is common even in people with a perfectly straight septum. A strip prevents that collapse and improves airflow either way.

Will a nasal strip stay on for a full Ironman distance race?

A quality sport strip is designed to hold through many hours of sweat and open water. For very long distance racing, drying the skin thoroughly before applying it and pressing the edges down firmly after the swim will help it last the full day.
